"Educated women have educated children."
Gansu province covers 454,000 square kilometers of land and has a population of 26 million. At an altitude of 7000 feet, Gansu is located at the edge of the Gobi desert. It serves as a throughway for the famed Silk Road which is one of the cradles of ancient Chinese culture. But sadly, it is a place of want; its dry yellow earth yields fallow harvests and there is a shortage of drinking water.
Beijing, since introducing economic reform in the late 1980s, has been making efforts to improve conditions in Gansu, and there has been some progress. People living in the remote areas now have adequate food and clothing, and nearly all those residing in the mountain areas have electricity and clean drinking water.
The Chinese government has also turned its attention to education. Half of 'dangerous' village schools located in rural area have been rebuilt in the last five years through central government funding. For all rural areas in China the education is free from Grad one through Grad nine. But for students who come from impoverished family background specially for female students going to university is still a huge challenge.
EGRC is committed to help young women from Longxi, Anding and Yuzhong areas of Gansu getting university education.
