"Educated women have educated children."
The BC Society for Educating Girls of Rural China (EGRC) founded in 2005 is a registered Canadian charity. EGRC’s mission is to assist young women from impoverished rural areas of the Gansu province in China to obtain a university education.
In 5 years EGRC has sponsored 211 students. 185 students are currently studying at 91 universities in over 20 different cities of China. In 2009
the Society celebrated the first 26 graduates. One of the 26 graudates is in a Masters program in Xinan University to study Physical Geography on a full Scholarship.
In the summer of 2010 there will be 50 more students graduating. Among these graduates, 9 are accepted into Masters programs in different universities in China.
Three sponsored students travelled from China to Vancouver, Canada in May 2009 to attend a concert titled “Youth for Youth”, and to meet local Canadian patrons for the first time. This event has brought attention from Canadian and Chinese media including CBC Radio, CBC National TV, The Vancouver Sun, The Vancouver Courier, Chinese Global Press, and Xinhua News Agency. EGRCs’ work has received glowing reviews and praise from all forms of media.
EGRC is proud to announce the completion of rebuilding a village elementary school in Anding, Gansu province in June 2009. This project is EGRC’s first financial co-operation with Chinese local government. The funding from EGRC’s part is generously provided by a Hong Kong – Canadian individual. The school provides education to 200 elementary students from nearby villages in the Anding area.
Educating women in developing countries is a global issue. The result of providing women the power of education will help change the world.
